Connecting: Sydney Harbour Bridge
Sydney Harbour Bridge may not be the longest but is the largest and widest steel arch bridge with the top of the bride standing 134 meters above the harbor. At 151.3 feet wide, the Guinness world book of record list it as the widest long-span bridge in the world. This is also one of the only structures that allow supervised climbing of the bridge. This bride is above 86 years old and it is one of the photographed landmarks of Australia. The local calls this bride the coat-hanger, because of the arch-based design. This bridge's design was influenced by the Hell Gate Bridge in New York City. The bridge construction started in 1924 and took 1400 men with 53,000 tonnes of steel. It now carries 8 traffic lanes and two rail lines, one for each side.
In fact, people suffering from Acrophobia- fear of heights have taken the bridge climb to help overcome fears. It is believed acrophobia affect 5% of the world population.
When I was in Calcutta in 2006 I happened to visit the iconic landmark of Calcutta the Howrah Bridge the massive steel structure which is considered as one of the longest cantilever bridges of its type in the world. When it was constructed it was the third longest cantilever bridge at the time and now it the sixth longest one of its types. It spreads about 1500 ft over the Hooghly river and it is 71 feet wide. There is a total of 8 lines of traffic lines and what makes this bridge unique is that it built without a single nut or bolt and is held together by rivets. It extends across the Hooghly river and connects Howrah and Calcutta. It is also regarded as one of the busiest among them as it carries a daily traffic of over 100,000 vehicles and countless pedestrians.
What is the primary purpose of a bridge? Build to connect rivers banks, mountain slopes and bring cities and nations together.
John Maxwell once said: Every one communicates but only a few connect. In the world of leadership, it means, identifying with, and relating to others in such a way to gain influence. When it comes to parenting it is not to do more of correction but create more connection.
Jesus Christ is our connection to God, heaven, and kingdom of God. We are God's connection to the world. Our ultimate goal is to connect people to Jesus. When we go to school, workplace, community gatherings, a church we are given the opportunity to connect with others.
John 3: 16 says: For God so loved the world, that he gave his only son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. I would like to read it like this: For God so connected to the world that he gave his only son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have an everlasting connection. Prayerlessness is not theoretically a discipline issue but it is a faith issue. John 15: 7 says: If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. This is creating that fundamental connection possible. Get your eyes off the focus of unbelief and focus on God's grace and faith.
Each friend represents a world in us, a world possibly not born until they arrive, and it is only by this meeting that a new world is born, said: Anais Nin. Finding someone you can really connect is like winning the lottery, it happens basically never but if it does, you really shouldn't blow it. The tragedy of today's world is that we have the opportunity like never before to be connected but it takes love from both ends to hold it tight. Every moment of life is precious if today is the last day of your life, would you want to do what you are about to do it today, asked Steve Job. Live your life today and connect with others like you are the best thing in the world.
Pray with me
God our Father in heaven,
Help me to get my heart right, renew my mind and thinking.
Teach me, gentle savior, to ask for your heavenly connection and for your heavenly wisdom and understanding as I strive to reconnect with you.
Lead me to rebuild the relationship I once shared and to understand the purpose to which I being called.
In Jesus name, Amen
